Ring in the New Year surrounded by good-humoured FSCers at one of Switzerland’s most famous tourist towns, sandwiched between lakes - the Thuner- and Brienzerseen - and surrounded by the spectacular Jungfraujoch, Eiger and Mönch mountains. (The Mönch protects the Jungfrau from the Eiger).
This area is famous as the birthplace of the modern ski vacation; amongst its modern lifts and gondolas, it hosts a cog railway dating from the 1880’s which links the main skiing areas. The Brit Henry Lunn introduced the first ever ski package holiday here in 1910. His son founded the Kandahar Ski Club, where slalom racing started in 1922.
We will have the opportunity to try the two main areas. The Kleine Scheidegg/Männlichen is the centre point of this region with a great variety of runs for all levels – if you are adventurous try “Oh God” and “Blackrock”. Treat yourself to a Rösstiza at the Bahnhof restaurant at Kleine Scheidegg.
The Mürren/Schilthorn includes the steep descents from the Schilthorn, and Piz Gloria, where you can enjoy lunch in the rotating “Top of Europe” Restaurant, at 3454m. It is also famous as the setting of a memorable scene in the James Bond film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.”
There are no less than three new chair lifts opening in December this year – the principle one being the EIGERNORDWAND, a 6-seater chairlift from Arvengarten to Eigergletscher.
Our 3* Hotel Bernerhof, located in the centre of town, welcomes us with typical Swiss hospitality. And for those late risers among us, the hotel is located directly across from Interlaken West train station … just in case you don’t make the bus!
On New Year’s Eve we enjoy a multi course dinner with live band.
This trip is one of our nearest destinations – hence a short but sweet bus ride.
