#8 Krippenstein / Dachstein West, Austria 5 - 7 February 2010
Krippenstein is the new Alpine destination of the season. This Austrian resort of the Dachstein region, south-west of Salzburg, is getting every year a higher recognition on the freeriders' scene. So after our FSC freeriders have tested all the best in the Alps (Chamonix, La Grave, St Anton, Andermatt/Disentis, Zermatt etc.), we also felt we had to give it a try. Sure, at first sight the piste map does not look impressive - only 3 cable cars, and a couple of runs earmarked. But that's what freeriders are looking for! Huge, wild, untouched terrain. From the top of Krippenstein (2100m), you can expect a 11km-long run down for 1500m of vertical, and 30km of alternative off-piste routes… Probably too much for one single week-end, but this is definitely heaven for anyone enjoying the mountain from its purest side. Of course the non-freeriders are welcome. The bus will take them to the close ski resort of Dachstein-West which covers a rather large area for beginners and intermediate skiers, with some 36 lifts and numerous blue, red (and black) runs over Gosau-Russbach-Zwieselalm. The rather low trip price actually includes 1 day with local guides in Krippenstein for expert freeriders as well as those looking for an introduction to off-piste skiing and new sensations, or 1 day with instructors for those heading to Dachstein-West. Our accomodation is in the valley at the BSFZ (Bundessport- und Freizeitzentrum) in Obertraun, which obviously includes many facilities like sauna or heated outdoor swimming pool. To try out beginning of February… Just in case you are into really extreme sports. |
